The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro was established in decree No.33 from July 25, 1979. The school was officially opened to students on the 15th of November 1979, on the temporary campus of their host communities, which was the historic township in Ilaro, Ogun State. The initial location that was used by the Polytechnic was the site that housed The Anglican Grammar School, Ilaro just half a kilometer away from the Ilaro township’s junction.

The Polytechnic was based on this temporary site from 1983 until it was moved to its permanent location along the Ilaro/Oja-Odan road approximately three kilometers away from Ilaro township. It is also 60 km from Idiroko Idiroko, a Nigerian border town in the Benin Republic. Ilaro town is an old town that is that is locked between Lagos and Abeokuta which is the capital city in Ogun State. The Polytechnic covers a total area of 898.116 hectares of land in its permanent location.

The masterplan of the Polytechnic shows 2 distinct campus areas for the university i.e. East as well as West campuses. The East campus is equipped with infrastructure consisting of accommodation for staff as well as hostels for students and sports facilities, as well as The main library Directorate of Student Affairs, Medical Centre, Polyconsult and Industrial Services, Post Office, Works and Services Department, Petrol Station, Staff Schools (Nursery Primary and Secondary), Student Computer Centre, School of Applied Science and School of Management Studies.

Both Campuses are interconnected to each other internally via motorable tarred roads equipped with street lighting and sidewalks for pedestrians. The buildings are linked by grassy lawns that are well-groomed with gorgeous landscaping. Car parking is available in areas that are strategically placed within the campus. The space currently occupied by the Polytechnic is a tiny fraction of the total land that it covers, which means there is room for growth.
